Need a Holiday Gift?

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

If you’re looking for something unique for the friends and family on your holiday shopping list this year, consider stopping by Skyland Trail. Each December, we transform our Meditation Pavilion into a one-stop craft shop called “Special Occasions.”

This client-run and client-vendor holiday store is filled with original client art of all shapes, sizes and colors– there’s something for everyone on your list.

Special Occasions gives clients an opportunity to sell their art and make a profit. Clients are excited to have the opportunity to display and to sell their art, and enjoy feeling rewarded when their work is recognized and appreciated.

Client’s have decorated the Meditation Pavilion on Skyland Trail campus to create a festive store where staff, families, volunteers, board members, and clients can purchase art as gifts for the holidays.  Items for sale include plants/flowers, original mixed media artwork, photography, hand-made cards, pottery, jewelry, coffee, tea and snacks.

Stop by our campus and check out the great gifts at “Special Occasions.”

Dedication Celebration for the Dorothy C. Fuqua Center

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

We are all so excited to celebrate the November 12th ribbon cutting celebration for the Dorothy C. Fuqua Center.  The renovations and additions to the facility were funded by Initiatives for Program and Campus Expansion, a capital campaign launched in 2005 which raised  $11.7 million for capital enhancements and programming to serve adults with serious mental illness.

The Fuqua Center includes a training and education center, as well as computer learning center to be used by clients of Skyland Trail’s Vocational Services Program. This facility will allow clients access to state-of-the-art technology, better preparing them to return to school or for employment when they reintegrate into the community following treatment at Skyland Trail.

These state-of-the-art additions and improvements will allow us to better serve adults with mental illness who come to Skyland Trail for treatment. By providing them with the facilities to train them for successful careers in the community, we are giving our clients more hope for their future.

Skyland Trail is grateful for the many generous donations, recognized by the following: Hugh M. Inman Wing ; Dot and Ed Jackson Patio Garden; Goodman Training and Education Center; Tompkins Family Art Gallery; Charles Evans Computer Learning Center ; and the Pathway to Recovery.

We look forward to using our new space to provide hope for those in recovery. We are so thankful for all of our friends and supporters.

Sincerely,

Everyone’s Invited: Fall Community Worship

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

The Pastoral Counseling program and Adjunctive Therapy program are excited to announce the Annual Fall Community Worship Service and Alumni Celebration on Sunday, November 21st from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Skyland Trail’s Health and Education Center.  We welcome anyone who may be interested in Skyland Trail to participate together with us as a community, as this is a time we look forward to greeting old friends and meeting new ones.

The Worship Service will be a time of intentional community, with a focus on the joy that exists in our community and opportunities to explore the role of music, art and horticulture in worship. The theme of the worship service is “Surrounded by Joy.”  The event aims to bring the community of Skyland Trail together, as well as to educate the public about mental illness, in order to reduce stigma. A free lunch and the Alumni Celebration will follow the service.

The Alumni Celebration is a way for us to stay connected.  Skyland Trail makes an effort to keep in contact with alumni by inviting them to special events throughout the year.  Our Fall Alumni Celebration allows us to recognize Skyland Trail alumni and acknowledge the many successes of our past and look forward to the future.  The Alumni Celebration is a time when we honor each others’ journey in recovery and acknowledge the hard work contributed by each individual.  It gives us great pleasure to see friends from the past come together to share stories and have a good time.

Please plan to join us on Sunday, November 21st.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Fall at Skyland Trail!

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Libba (bottom left) joins Charlie (top right), and volunteers to put a scare crow at Whole Foods

Fall is here, and what better way to celebrate than with pumpkins! Our clients created Wheelin’ Wilson—a scarecrow that’s a work of art—and set him up in front of the Whole Foods in Buckhead. This was done as part of our horticultural therapy program, which is lead by Libba Shortridge.

We all want to extend our warmest congratulations to Libba, as she just received her certificate from the American Horticulture Therapy Association to be a registered horticulture therapist. This is quite a feat, as there are only a handful of licensed horticultural therapists in the state! Libba brings an incredible amount of energy and enthusiasm to Skyland Trail, and she always comes up with creative ways to help clients in their recovery. Wheelin’ Wilson is just another example of one of Libba’s great ideas. Her new credentials will allow Libba to be one of the very few people in the country to teach, supervise, and support other students and professionals in the field.

Libba and Charlie make sure everything is just right!

We are so glad that Libba’s on our team!

Benefits of Laughter–Just Around the Corner

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Skyland Trail’s 13th Annual Benefits of Laughter (BOL) gala is just a few short weeks away! BOL 2010 is set to take place October 21, 2010 at the beautiful St. Regis Atlanta in the heart of Buckhead. The Skyland Trail staff has been working hard on all the details to ensure that this year’s event will be a memorable night.

Comedy entertainment for BOL will be provided by John Heffron, former winner of the popular television serious Last Comic Standing. This is a great opportunity to see one of the rising comedic stars – and be assured that his act will be tasteful, while also hilarious.

This week, festivities get underway as we honor our BOL sponsors at our Patron Party. Hosted by Kelly Loeffler and Jeffrey Sprecher, this party is sure to be fabulous and will get us all excited for the event October 21st.

Benefits of Laughter is vital to our clients as they seek recovery from mental illness. All proceeds from BOL go to the financial aid program that assists clients and families who could not otherwise access or continue treatment. We gave out a record amount of financial aid dollars in 2009, and will do so again in 2010. Your support is crucial.

There’s still time to join us on October 21st. We are nearly sold out, but we want to ensure there is space for all who want to support Skyland Trail. Check out our events page for more information: http://www.skylandtrail.org/special-event/benefits-of-laughter-2010

I’m looking forward to seeing you there!

The Pastoral Counseling program is excited to announce a community event: Fellowship Through Spirituality to be held Sunday, September 12th from 10:00 a.m. – 12 p.m. on the Skyland Trail Campus.

Fellowship through Spirituality is open to clients, client families and friends, as well as staff. It will be a time of intentional community, with hands-on experiences through which participants have the opportunity to explore the role of spirituality by participating in music, horticulture, art and yoga rotation groups. The event aims to educate the public about mental illness, in order to reduce stigma. There will be time for refreshments and gathering as a community as well.

The Pastoral Counseling program at Skyland Trail seeks to address the spiritual aspects of a person’s recovery from mental illness. It works within the holistic recovery model, and is intended to support clients from any religious or spiritual background or belief system. We understand that a person’s spiritual beliefs are very personal and we seek to offer support to those who express an interest.

The Pastoral Counseling program is looking forward to welcoming clients, families and staff to Skyland Trail for this wonderful community event.

Join us for Skyland Trail’s 13th Annual Benefits of Laughter

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

I am excited to announce that plans are well underway for Skyland Trail’s 13th Annual Benefits of Laughter (BOL) gala. BOL 2010 is set to take place October 21, 2010 at the beautiful St. Regis Atlanta in the heart of Buckhead.

This year’s Honorary Chairs are community leaders and long-time Skyland Trail friends, Amy and Cecil Conlee. Both Amy and Cecil have devoted so much time and energy to our mission, and we look forward to honoring their selfless spirit. Comedy entertainment for the evening will be provided by John Heffron, former winner of the popular television serious Last Comic Standing. This is a great opportunity to see one of the rising comedic stars – and be assured that his act will be tasteful, while also hilarious.

Most importantly, Benefits of Laughter is vital to our clients as they seek recovery from mental illness. All proceeds from BOL go to the financial aid program that assists clients and families who could not otherwise access or continue treatment. We gave out a record amount of financial aid dollars in 2009, and will do so again in 2010. Your support is crucial.

Special thanks goes out to our Event Chairs Leslie Wierman and Anne Hennessy, who are being assisted by a dedicated and talented team of community and business volunteers. Benefits of Laughter 2010 is shaping up to be a magnificent night, and we’re looking forward to seeing all of you at the St. Regis!

Skyland Trail to Host 12th ‘Annual Arts in the Garden’ May 7

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Hello everyone,

It’s hard to believe that we’re just under three months away from Arts in the Garden 2010!  This year’s event will take place Friday, May 7 on the Skyland Trail campus, and the theme is ‘Honoring Our Journey’.  For those of you unfamiliar with Arts in the Garden (AITG), I’d like to provide you with some details about what has become one of our favorite days of the year at Skyland Trail.

This will be our 12th annual Arts in the Garden, and with each passing year, the event continues to grow in popularity!  Held each May during Mental Health Awareness Month, AITG serves as an opportunity to celebrate the many talents and abilities of consumers of mental health services, and is a great place for consumers, family members, mental health professionals and the Atlanta community to gather and network.  The day is filled with festivities throughout the Skyland Trail gardens for everyone to enjoy.  Attendees experience hands-on workshops, make & take classes, demonstrations, art exhibits, music and dance performances, plant and art sales, a silent auction, and mental health education.  AITG also aims to educate the public about mental illness in order to reduce stigma.

Skyland Trail clients, as well as community organizations and consumers of mental health services in the Atlanta area, have an opportunity to show their creative talents through visual and performing arts.  This very special day has 500-plus participants and is recognized by the mental health community.  We invite anyone interested to come experience this wonderful day with us at Skyland Trail!

Welcome to Skyland Trail’s new Community Forum

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

On behalf of all us at Skyland Trail, welcome to our new Community Forum!  This section of our Web site allows us to keep you up-to-date on everything going on both at Skyland Trail and in the mental health world in general.  I’d like to invite you to visit our site for updates on clinical information, events, client activities, awards, new employees and much more.  We will also be keeping you abreast of new research findings and innovations in psychiatry.  While great strides have been made in heightening awareness about the importance of mental health care, the field is advancing daily – and we are compelled as an organization to educate and inform our clients and their families, our constituents, and the public on this changing field of knowledge.

Please feel free to comment on any of the information we provide in the Community Forum.  We value feedback from our constituents.  As we begin a new year, I’d like to thank each of you who has made Skyland Trail what is today.  My best to you in 2010!

Sincerely,

Beth Finnerty
